Results and Findings

Current findings include spatial modelling of socioeconomic predictors of diabetes and hypertension service utilisation across Tanzania mainland. Additional CLIMATCH findings will be added as analyses are completed.

Findings

Healthcare service utilisation findings

Bayesian spatial models identified socioeconomic factors associated with healthcare service utilisation for diabetes and hypertension across Tanzania mainland. Mobile phone ownership was the strongest positive predictor for both conditions, while household size was the strongest negative predictor for hypertension service utilisation.

Diabetes service utilisation

  • Mobile phone ownership: 10% higher utilisation (IRR 1.10; 95% CrI 1.06–1.14).
  • Literacy: 3% higher utilisation (IRR 1.03; 95% CrI 1.01–1.05).
  • Television ownership: 2% higher utilisation (IRR 1.02; 95% CrI 1.01–1.05).
  • Radio ownership: 3% lower utilisation (IRR 0.97; 95% CrI 0.96–0.99), reflecting rural district profiles.

Hypertension service utilisation

  • Mobile phone ownership: 6% higher utilisation (IRR 1.06; 95% CrI 1.02–1.10).
  • Literacy: 3% higher utilisation.
  • Household size: 22% lower utilisation, making it the strongest negative predictor identified for hypertension.

Key interpretation

Literacy, access to communication technologies, and household structure are associated with differences in diabetes and hypertension service utilisation. These inequalities should be considered when planning health communication, outreach, and access to chronic disease services.
